#Enter to #win Mrs. Renfro’s Gourmet Salsa! ends 10/21

Mrs. Renfro’s
Gourmet Salsas and more

For 71 years, our family’s been bringing you delicious and innovative products at affordable prices. From our Green and Habanero Salsas to our Peach and Black Bean Salsa, we’re proud to offer the finest flavors and authentic tastes of the Southwest.

In 1940, with the Depression still a vivid memory, George Renfro took a big risk for a man with a family. He quit his job selling restaurant supplies and condiments. And with little more than sheer determination and the support of his family, George and his wife, Arthurine, co-founded George Renfro Food Company in the garage of their north Fort Worth home. In their new venture, they distributed packaged spices and pepper sauces throughout Fort Worth and the surrounding areas.

Today, with sons Jack and Bill, and grandchildren Doug, Becky and James active in the day-to-day operations, Renfro Foods and its Mrs. Renfro’s label, continue to grow at a fast pace. Mrs. Renfro’s products, which now include more than 30 salsas, sauces and relishes, are available at supermarkets, gourmet and gift shops and fruit and vegetable stands in all 50 states, Canada, the Caribbean and England.

You’ll find our salsas and condiments online so you can order your favorite Renfro® products from the comfort of your home. If you’re looking for new ways to spice up your meals, please visit our Recipes section for some great ideas. You can also read about our story, view our latest news, or play some fun games in our Kid’s Corner. Enjoy!

My family was blessed with some of Mrs.Renfro’s fine product line a few weeks ago. Let me tell you, if you haven’t been lucky enough to try these products yet, make a point of it. You will NOT be disappointed! I chose the Nacho Cheese Sauce, Roasted Salsa, Mexican Hot Sauce and Ghost Pepper Salsa for my review.

The Nacho Cheese Sauce was good. My family really enjoyed it. They did say that it was a bit sweeter than they were accustomed to, but that must not have been a problem, as they finished off the entire jar at one sitting!

The Roasted Salsa was ridiculous, it was so good! Just pass me a spoon, boys, I could eat this like soup! Nice big chunks of tender crisp veggies swimming in a spicy smoky tomato base that really must be tasted to be believed! I hid half the jar in the back of the fridge so I’d have some for later that I didn’t have to share! It is THAT good!

My husband does’t care for salsa. He’s not much of a veggie eater even on a good day, and to willingly eat them as a condiment is not gonna happen. He does, however like smooth hot sauces, so the Mexican Hot Sauce is right up his alley. He’s been dowsing everything with Mrs. Refro’s Mexican Hot Sauce…I even caught him tipping the jar into his ramen the other day (do NOT get me started on his ramen habit)

I asked for the Ghost Pepper Salsa because there is a certain faction, here in the lost world, that complains and complains that I never bring home a hot sauce or salsa that packs enough heat to suit them. They don’t complain anymore! This stuff is HOT! Like satan’s living room hot. Like blistered my tongue hot. S-E-R-I-O-U-S-L-Y hot. To me, most really hot sauces have no flavor, just heat. Mrs. Renfro’s Ghost Pepper Salsa actually tastes good…before it burns your taste buds to a crisp, that is. If you have a glutton for punishment someone who likes a bit of heat, they will sing your praises to the skies for this one!

With over 30 varieties of salsas, sauces and relishes and whether you like them mild, medium, hot or extra hot, Mrs. Renfro’s got ‘em all! Go take a look, I bet you can’t leave without finding something you just have to have!

The wonderful folks at Mrs. Refro’s want to bless one of my readers with FOUR jars of their fabulous salsa’s or sauces! You pick ‘em out, they’ll wrap ‘em up and ship them right to your door! Thank you so much!

Here’s what you do ~

HuggableTeddyBears.com

A special relationship started in 1992 when Robert Taylor, then ten years old, was enrolled in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program by his mom. Her goal was to find a role model for Robert.

At this time, Brian Lewis was waiting to be paired with a little brother. When Brian was young he had wanted to enroll in the program as a Little Brother but he had never been able to do so. As an adult, Brian decided what a better time to fulfill the need another child may have.

Robert was successfully matched with Brian through Big Brothers Big Sisters of Aurora, IL. They have maintained this relationship since they were matched, which brings us to the present time.

HuggableTeddyBears.com is the brainchild of Robert and Brian. Their goal is to have a little fun and put a smile on the face of your loved ones.

It’s National Mud Pack Day! (yes, really!)

September 30th, 2011 -- Posted in odd holidays | No Comments »

National Mud Pack Day is today. Pile on the facial. Ladies, this is your day. Guys, you can get a mud pack facial, too. Just don’t let your buddies know that you did!!

Mud packs were once the rage for facial treatments. It is still popular. But, the mud in facials has been replaced with a variety of other ingredients. It is supposed to keep the skin young, soft and supple. Does it work? Girls who use it, swear by it.

Did you know? A mud pack is a quick treatment for bee stings. Use it, if needed, when you are out on a hike, or until you can get to a place to be treated for bee and wasp stings.

Celebrate today with a mud pack. Guys, make this a special day by buying a gift certificate for a facial for your special lady. Make sure to tell her its not that she needs it. Rather, its because it is comforting, and will make her feel good.

Dead Sea Mud Facial Recipe:

As skin cells are constantly being replaced, dead cells accumulate and slow down epidermal function. The regular use of a mud mask removes dead cells, stimulates circulation of blood in your face and brings oxygen and other essential nutrients to the skin. Using a mud mask once a week to hydrate and tone your skin is one way to encourage healthy skin. Of course you could take a trip to a spa on the Dead Sea – but you can easily create your own homemade mud facial mask, compresses or shampoos at home….Read more HERE

#Enter to #win an authentic Jacob Bromwell All-American Flour Sifter ends 10/20

September 29th, 2011 -- Posted in giveaway, product reviews | 43 Comments »

Jacob Bromwell

Jacob Browmwell is a specialty housewares company that manufactures authentic campfire, kitchen, and fireplace products for families of yesterday, today, and for generations to come. As America’s oldest housewares company established in 1819, we offer a select group of timeless products that modernization has not improved. Our classic products take people on an emotional journey into nostalgia and tradition, and allow them to find joy in the simple and genuine American past as an antidote to our over-perfected modern lifestyle.

Back in 1819, Jacob Browmwell had an idea: create the highest quality cooking, baking and campfire products that American families could count on to last generations. so he traveled from his home in Baltimore, Maryland, to set up shop in Cincinnati, Ohio. His factory manufactured everything from flour sifters, cheese graters, and frying pans, to buckets and popcorn poppers. Today, this all-American company is recognized as America’s Oldest Cookware. All Jacob Bromwell products continue to be handcrafted in the USA and are
backed by a Lifetime Guarantee.

There are few things in life, that give me as much pleasure that being in my kitchen does. When I have my hands buried in a lump of bread dough or sift flour into a mixing bowl, I feel completely connected to all the women who have come before me. Those who’s hands have performed the same actions, perhaps even thought the same thoughts as I think while doing so. The immensity of it all is a little overwhelming at times, even as the actions connect and comfort.

I remember, as a girl, standing in my grandmother’s kitchen, watching her fat little hands as they created wonderful exotic German dishes for us to eat. I loved it when she would hand her little Bromwell’s Bee sifter over to me and allow me to sift the flour for dumplings or strudel or whatever lovely stuff she was making that day.

I still have that little sifter. Discovered in a dark corner of one of my mother’s cupboards after her death…passed from my grandmother, to my mom and finally to me, I used it frequently, until the day the crank just didn’t want to turn anymore. Now it sits, in it’s place of honor, on my baking center, and there it will stay, until it’s time to pass it to one of my own daughters.

When that day comes, with it will go my shiny new Bromwell’s All-American Flour Sifter that has come to live in the lost world recently. The sifter whose handle Mikayla, Nelly, Mattie, and Sophie will turn for me and maybe tell their own little girls about someday.

I wonder if Jacob Bromwell ever thought that the housewares his little company turned out all those years ago, could have such an impact on the history of an individual family? That Bromwell’s would grow into a company that would stand the test of time, and today, some 200 years later, would find housewives, like me, still singing his praises?

While my Bromwell’s Bee (no longer made) and Bromwell’s All-American Sifter play an important role in my kitchen, they are only two of the wonderful quality products still being made at Jacob Bromwell today. When you visit the website, you’ll find a facsinating array of cookware, whispering to you about days gone by. From the Original Popcorn Popper to the Pioneer Folding Toaster to his St. Joseph Flat Shredders, there’s a bit of history waiting to be told and memories waiting to be made.

Are you ready to make some memories in your home? The fine folks at Jacob Bromwell want to help you do just that. They are offering a Bromwell’s All-American Sifter, like the one I received, to one of you! Thank you so much!

Tell Grocery store CEOs: Refuse #Monsanto’s #GMO sweet corn!

September 29th, 2011 -- Posted in GMO | No Comments »

Right now, Monsanto, the corporation responsible for producing roughly 90% of genetically modified seeds around the globe, is working to bring their new, GMO sweet corn to a grocery store aisle or farmer’s market near you.1

Unlike Monsanto’s other GMO crops — which are primarily fed to animals — this sweet corn is intended for direct human consumption.

This is the first time Monsanto has engineered a vegetable that could be served straight to your dinner table. It’s health impacts on humans are largely unknown – but if this unlabeled, and potentially dangerous products succeeds, Monsanto is sure to bring us even more.

As an activist and consumer, you are in a powerful position to pressure leading U.S. grocery stores to reject Monsanto’s new GMO corn.

Tell U.S. food companies: Americans don’t want Monsanto’s GMO sweet corn in our grocery stores!

Monsanto’s GMO sweet corn is engineered to tolerate the herbicide Roundup, and to produce the insect-killing toxin Bt.

These modifications have been shown to lead to some serious health problems in animals who eat them.

A study released by the International Journal of Biological Sciences found that Monsanto’s GMO corn led to organ failure in mammals.2 This GMO corn has also recently been linked to a new pathogen causing crop failure and a sharp spike in livestock infertility – as high as 20%. But despite the warnings of one of the nation’s leading plant pathologists that more study was needed to determine potential health impacts on humans, the USDA rapidly approved this corn for us to eat.3

Even worse, lobbyists for Monsanto and others in the chemical and agribusiness industry have successfully fought tooth and nail to keep GMO products totally unlabeled. So shockingly, consumers are being denied the right to know if they’re purchasing Monsanto’s new genetically modified sweet corn.

Tell U.S. grocery stores: Americans don’t want Monsanto’s GMO sweet corn!

Some of Monsanto’s GMO corn is already in human food – used to make additives in processed food products – and even in small quantities it’s having scary effects.

This past spring a Canadian study found that the GMO toxin inserted in Bt corn was found in the bloodstreams of 93 percent of pregnant women4 – just from its presence in processed grains and highly processed food products.

This finding challenges the industry’s long-held claim that Bt poses no threat to humans because it breaks down quickly in the gut. Rather, Bt appears to persist in the body, and potential lasting impacts merit a great deal more study.

But instead of more study, grocery stores could be on the verge of delivering up GMO corn in much higher doses and without processing – and we wouldn’t even know what we were eating.

We must raise our voice as consumers and urge grocery stores to reject Monsanto’s potentially dangerous new product, and stop this dangerous trend of Monsanto-made, straight to table products.

Sign the petition
The petition reads:
“As a consumer, I refuse to purchase Monsanto’s new genetically-modified sweet corn and urge you to avoid this potentially toxic product. Please protect your customers and reject this new GMO corn.”

It’s National Coffee Day!

September 29th, 2011 -- Posted in odd holidays | No Comments »

Today is National Coffee Day! Are you one of the millions who will celebrate? Start by sending a free Coffee Day eCard and then find out where you can go to get a free cup of joe. Some local and national businesses will offer free or discounted cups of coffee in honor of the occasion. Participating Krispy Kreme locations, for example, are offering a free 12oz cup of House Blend coffee all day long. You can also pick up a free medium coffee from 7-11am at any 7-Eleven in the U.S.A. or Canada. Don’t forget to pay attention to social media as some businesses plan to share coupons and specials with their loyal followers.

So, where did coffee come from and how did it become so popular? According to legend, a sixth-century Ethiopian goatherd named Kaldi discovered his goats frolicking from one coffee shrub to another. He recognized that the coffee berries they were eating had a stimulating effect, and he began to experiment with the seeds. A century later, brewed coffee emerged in Arabia and the popularity of coffee grew at an exponential rate.

Today, over 400 billion cups of coffee are consumed each year. It is a world commodity that is second only to oil. Don’t forget to take a coffee break (or two) to celebrate this historical and important beverage!

It’s Good Neighbor Day!

September 28th, 2011 -- Posted in odd holidays | No Comments »

Ah, Good Neighbor Day. It’s definitely a good thing. Being good neighbors is an important part of the social fiber that makes this country so great. Therefore, it seems only fitting that one day a year honors good neighbors.

Not so long ago, the world felt like a smaller place, and everybody knew everybody else in their neighbourhood. Now, many of us aren’t familiar with our neighbours, and only speak to them in passing. Why not use Good Neighbour Day as an opportunity to lend a proverbial cup of sugar, and get to know the people who live nearby?

This day of recognition is not to be confused with other forms of “Good Neighbor Days”. Stores proclaim “Good Neighbor Days” to promote sales, a wide range of organizations announce “Good Neighbor Days” to promote their cause, and local municipalities and governments proclaim “Good Neighbor Days” for a variety of reasons.

This day is to truly recognize and appreciate your good neighbor. Hopefully, one of those good neighbors is you!

#Enter to #win a great Skin Care Basics Set from Grateful Body ends 10/18

September 27th, 2011 -- Posted in eco friendly, giveaway, product reviews, vegan | 45 Comments »

Grateful Body

….Grateful Body was created in 1998. The name of the company is a reflection of my desire to be more grateful. Over the years I had started to see what an incredible and mysterious thing this body was, and how many phenomenal things it could do. How it healed itself, how it was a part of gaia, how full of life it was. And I had one! I was grateful to have a body! To eat with, to travel with, to love with, to understand with, to serve with – I became a grateful body (and no, the name had nothing to do with the Grateful Dead, even if we are based in Berkeley!)….

Grateful Body’s founder, Shannon, occasionally writes about his experiences with plants, people and nature - I hope you’ll take a few minutes and read more of Shannon’s writings HERE

Grateful Body is no slick website…besieging the senses and screaming you must try this or that or else. You will find no glorified claims of intantly younger skin, wrinkles magically erased or spotty skin cured overnight. Rather, to me, Grateful Body seems a calm little island, whispering about nourishing and healing the skin in ways that God and nature intended. Gently, organically, and without cruelty.

I was blessed, a few weeks ago with several Grateful Body products formulated for my oily skin -

Deep Cleanse – a clarifying and balancing cleanser which deeply cleanses without stripping, reduces blemish conditions and is excellent for makeup removal.

There are plenty of reasons to need a good cleanser – certain metabolic functions leave excess waste residue on our skin, as do emotional and mental stresses; and of course, there is dirt and pollution from the environment. Each Cleanser designed by Grateful Body cleans your skin by gently but effectively removing these surface impurities. You’ll feel the difference. Our Cleansers never dry or strip the skin and are free from detergents, fragrances, foaming agents and sulfates.

Toner – Normal to Oily Skin – A refreshing botanical mist filled with nutrients to balance, hydrate and purify while promoting the skin’s natural equilibrium.

Three of the many beneficial ingredients are . . .

Echinacea widely used in many different healing traditions, echinacea is a superior healer and immune-boosting herb that is excellent for daily use on the skin.

Lemongrass this tropical grass is refreshingly astringent and revitalizes skin while uplifting the spirit.

Green Tea A renowned antioxidant that prevents excessive free radical formation and keeps skin calm and protected.

Moisturizer – For Oily Skin – our incredibly light moisturizer. This low-oil moisturizer absorbs quickly and keeps skin clear for a smooth, balanced complexion. Just right for oily or blemished skin types

Three of the many beneficial ingredients are . . .

Horsetail Delivers trace minerals and silica to the skin for a strong resilient complexion.

Milk Thistle A good source of vitamin E and an excellent detoxifier to carry away impurities and toxins.

Sage Triloba Extract Naturally antiseptic and oil-balancing to keep skin feeling clean throughout the day.

Over the course of these last weeks, I have absolutely fallen in love with these products. I expected my skin to feel clean and moisturized, but I didn’t expect my skin to look so much more alive. I really hate to use terms like that. What does “my skin looks more alive” mean anyway? For me, it means my skin has a clean subtle glow…one I haven’t seen in a good many years. My skin feels smoother to touch and seems more elastic to me. My skin is noticably brighter, without using an exfoliating scrub. Not that I experience many breakouts at my age, but there hasn’t been one single bump since I began using Grateful Body products.

Now, just so you don’t think that the condition of my skin is a fluke, I want you to know that I shared these products with my son’s girlfriend, who has oily skin like mine and she has said much the same. She loves the way her skin looks and feels (and so does my son)

I can honestly say, that the Grateful Body product line is like no other skin care line I’ve tried to date, my skin looks and feels wonderful and I don’t feel like I’ve sold my soul to the devil (and harmed the earth and my fellow creatures) either.

The wonderful folks at Grateful Body would like to give one of my readers a chance to try the same set of products, geared to your own unique skin type, that I was blessed to receive. Thank you so much!

Here’s what you do ~
