We were blessed, a few weeks ago, to be able to try “By Hand Granola” and tell you about it here in the lost world. You could see the chunkalicious goodness through the packaging when I opened the box and I knew that we were on to something special! We were not disappointed!
They had us from the first bite of light crunchy cinnamony goodness. Chock full of macadamia nuts, almonds, cranberries and coconut, the By Hand Original is a breakfast for the gods! It was filling, satisfying and definitely kept me going well into the afternoon! I never got a second bowl, though, as young Daniel claimed it on his way out the door and that was that!
I was a little sneakier with the bags of By Hand Gluten Free granola though and hid the smaller bag before calling Daniel to the table! It was another home run, this time with gluten free oats and whole cashews! Be still my heart! (and yes, the rest of the bag disappeared just as quickly as the first one did)
Now I can honestly tell you that I have eaten a lot of granola in my day, I’ve reviewed some of them right here and have my own recipe that I swear by, but this By Hand Granola is right up there in my top 5 favorites….ever! It is truly too good to miss!

Today is Leap Day! Julius Caesar (with help from his astronomer, Sosigenes) added Leap Years to the calendar in 45 BC. They discovered that there are actually 365.2425 days in a year and decided to compensate by adding one extra day to “Februarius” every four years. Under normal circumstances, a date that falls on a Tuesday one year will fall on a Wednesday the next year. However, in a Leap Year we “leap” over one day of the week, which is how this phenomenon got its name.
There are many traditions and superstitions associated with Leap Years and Leap Days. According to an Irish legend, women have the privilege of proposing marriage in a Leap Year, and any man that refuses must offer a gift in recompense. People born on a Leap Day are known as Leaplings or Leapers. Each country has to have a policy about when a February 29th birthday is legally observed in a non-Leap Year!
Leap Day comes around just once every four years, so take some time to celebrate this unique occasion!
Once upon a time, in a land called the lost world, lived a little girl named Caitlyn who had more hair than any two children, combined, should have. Once a day, the evil witch would coax little Caitlyn into her lair and proceed to torture her with an instrument she called a “hairbrush”
Poor little Caitlyn’s screams could be heard throughout the house as she begged and pleaded for the torture to stop but on and on it went until the witch tired of the screams and braided poor little Caitlyn’s hair for the day.
Poor little Caitlyn endured the torture for years until the day came that even the witch tired of it. Then in a fit of anger, the witch held up poor little Caitlyn’s beautiful blonde braid and in one clean motion, hacked it off with a pair of scissors!
It was magic, that day in the lost world, that transformed poor little Caitlyn into a smiling happy little girl and turned the evil witch into a more relaxed mommy who still, to this day, has that golden braid wrapped in tissue paper buried deep into a drawer with her other treasures like lost teeth and umbilical stumps.

We were recently sent a Funny Irish T-shirt from FoulMouthShirts.com. There was actually a tussel over who would get this shirt once it arrived in the world…my oldest son James, as you can see, won!
This is a great high quality tee that was sized accurately and has held it’s shape well after several washes. There has been no discernable fading and my son is very happy with it.

For hundreds of years, mystical legends, stories, and traditions have been shared about the loss of baby teeth. In some cultures, children’s teeth were buried in order to hide them from witches and evil spirits who would use the tooth’s powers for voodoo. The Vikings believed that children’s teeth had a magical power in them that would help them fight in battle. They would even pay their children for their lost baby teeth so that they could be used to string onto battle necklaces and other jewelry.
Over time, people began to share stories about a Tooth Mouse who would scamper around town and steal children’s teeth in the middle of the night. This story of the mouse soon transformed into the story of the Tooth Fairy, who would leave treasures under the children’s pillows in exchange for their lost teeth.

Retired St. Louis dentist and inventor Dr. Howard Wright is releasing his groundbreaking color-changing toothpaste after a 10-year process that has become a labor of love.
The new dental breakthrough, Vortex Toothpaste, makes kids want to brush their teeth longer and more vigorously thanks to a fun color-changing process.
The color-changing phenomenon itself is refreshingly simple. Vortex is dispensed as twin streams of red and blue toothpaste and, as the child starts to brush, the colors are mixed into a vivid purple.
Vortex Toothpaste also has an emphasis on natural ingredients, and contains no sodium-lauryl-sulfate or SLS, a common foaming agent.
“When brushing with conventional toothpaste,” says Dr. Wright, “children find that the heavy foaming makes breathing through the mouth difficult, making the experience frightening. Remove the SLS, make it change color, and you have kids wanting to brush their teeth.”
Likewise, Dr. Wright discovered a study by the University of Oslo determining that SLS was directly linked to the development of canker sores, making the elimination of that foaming agent a priority to him.
Healthy mouths, gums and teeth can impact over all health so teaching good dental habits are a priority for me. We’ve done brushing charts, have a toothbrushing song we sing and have a plethora of character toothbrushes to encourage good dental hygiene, but it seems like Vortex color-changing toothpaste just might have had the most impact with Mikayla. She thinks the minty brands are “hot” and doesn’t like them at all but loves the flavor of her Vortex and anything purple must be good in her book!
It’s never made any sense to me that we avoid putting sodium-lauryl-sulfate on our heads, by way of shampoo (at least in the lost world), but putting in our little’s mouths was just fine! I really appreciate that Dr. Wright has kept it out of Vortex!

You know…being a teen, today, more than any time in recent history, is hard work. There’s the societal expectation to push and succeed, younger and younger it seems..peer pressure, normal teen angst etc. Add a troubled complextion to the mix and it’s hard to deal with some days!
