Today is National Coming Out Day! Observed every year on October 11, it was founded by Dr. Robert Eichberg and Jean O’Leary in 1988 to promote civil awareness about gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender issues and lifestyles. October 11 is the anniversary of the second March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights, which took place in 1987. Over half a million people participated in six days of demonstrations and activities.
National Coming Out Day is aimed at raising awareness of the LGBT community in order to give a familiar face to the LGBT rights movement. It’s celebrated in the United States, Switzerland, Germany, Canada, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom.
